Bredda takes MVP honors in Belize City Champions Cup

SportsBredda takes MVP honors in Belize City Champions Cup
F.C. Belize dropped West Lake, 2-nil, on goals from Gilroy “Bredda” Thurton and National Team player Byron “Barrow” Usher, both in second half, to claim the first Belize City Champions Cup trophy at the MCC Grounds this past Sunday, August 28. Due to security obligations, BDF was unable to appear for the third place match against Survivors.

Only one individual award was presented after the game, and it was the MVP trophy, which was, without a dissenting voice from those in attendance, placed in the hands of young Gilroy “Bredda” Thurton. Throughout the tournament, Bredda was a nightmare for defenders, and came off the bench in second half to score what turned out to be the winning goal in spectacular fashion. The youth has promise.

According to Jerome “Peeloff” Meheia, Yabra sports coordinator, Bredda has been playing against big men from he was 11 or 12 years old, when there was a man short on a team in one of the pick-up games at Yabra field. Under Peeloff’s guidance, the youth honed the skills and football intelligence with which he has suddenly burst onto the national football scene. As another little man with a big heart, Wayne “Miniman” Reynolds of the ‘80’s used to say, “the sky is the limit”.

All we can say to the football authorities is, take care of our youth.
