General?Brother Asher? leads grassroots march against hardship in Belize

At the gathering after the march, many issues were addressed. Asher spoke about the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, the increases in gas prices, the safety of children and other topics he believes are affecting the Belizean community.

Asher told Amandala that the suffering and the cry of the Belizean people motivated him to get up and speak out. He said that he considers himself the voice of the people who cannot speak, and the representative of those who cannot represent themselves.

Asher emphasized that the safety of the children is an issue that desperately needs urgent attention. He continued by saying that it hurts to see the number of rapes and abuse that has been happening to children lately. He said that the children are the future and that if we don?t protect them, then we don?t have any hopes for a future.

When asked how many people attended the march, Asher remarked that if only one person showed up, he would have thought it a success. He said that he could feel that the people who showed up intend to do something about the present situation in Belize. He also said that the feedback from the public, who he was actually trying to reach, was great.

Asher said that he is targeting the poor people, who are actually the ones in the situation.

Brother Asher told the newspaper that he wants the brothers to unite and stop the senseless killing and fighting against each other. He says that he intends to meet with the leaders of the church and to get them involved with his plans. He said that the churches needs to get rid of the Baptist, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist labels and realize that we are all serving the same God.

He added that ?labels keep us divided.?

Asher continued by saying that everybody always stand in the background and talk about what is happening, instead of them getting out there and letting the government become aware of what concerns us as citizens.

He said that he intends to keep the newspaper informed about his plans for another demonstration and other related events.
