SANTA ELENA TOWN, Cayo District, Fri. Apr. 23, 2021– The Santa Elena Police Department is currently investigating the murder of a 57-year-old security guard at Cayo One-Stop Hardware on George Price Highway.

According to police reports, sometime around 10:30 p.m., on Friday April 23, a security guard, Lionel Olivera, was on duty at the hardware store when he was approached by two male persons who intended to rob him of his gun.

One of the men, who was dressed in blue, revealed a firearm and directed it at the guard while his partner accosted the guard in an attempt to take away his firearm. The gunman fired a shot at the security guard, then both men scavenged his body for a firearm. The robbers found his security company-issued 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol, which they removed from his body before fleeing from the crime scene.

The police rushed to the scene of the crime not long after receiving reports of the incident. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, said, “[The police] observed Lionel Olivera, a 57-year[-old] security guard with apparent gunshot injuries. He was quickly rushed to the San Ignacio Community Hospital by officers, but he died while undergoing treatment.”

Police are currently monitoring several suspects. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, told the media that some clothing was found in the Bradley’s Bank area of Santa Elena Town, which the police believe was used by one of the robbers. The authorities continue to investigate this shooting incident, and it is expected that police will soon make an arrest.
