In the Friday, April 16, 2021 issue of this newspaper, in an article on page 25, Wellington C. Ramos wrote that: “In 1951 Philip Goldson, Leigh Richardson and George Price were placed on trial for sedition due to their political activities against the British government. Philip Goldson and Leigh Richardson were convicted and sent to prison, but George Price was acquitted.”

In fact, there were two separate sedition trials in the 1950s. In 1951, Goldson and Richardson were charged with sedition because of an article in THE BELIZE BILLBOARD, which was considered the newspaper organ of the anti-colonial People’s United Party (PUP) at that time. Mr. Price was not charged along with them.

In 1958, George Price was charged for sedition by the British colonial authorities here because of words in a speech he gave at a PUP public meeting. He was acquitted.

Up until late 1956, when there was a power struggle inside the PUP and Price replaced Richardson as PUP Leader, and Mr. Goldson and Mr. Richardson left the PUP, THE BILLBOARD, to repeat, was considered the newspaper organ of the PUP. It is not clear how Mr. Goldson became the owner of THE BELIZE BILLBOARD, but when he left the PUP in 1956 he took THE BILLBOARD along with him.

Under Mr. Price, the PUP then acquired their own printing press and began to publish THE BELIZE TIMES, which has been the newspaper organ of the PUP from that time, 1956.
