Day of Healing in Mayflower “Bailar” community

HighlightsDay of Healing in Mayflower “Bailar” community

The day aims to bring back the community unity of times past

The Mayflower “Bailar” community, also known as Ghost Town, a recognized stronghold of the Ghost Town Crips gang, will experience the 13th Day of Healing. The event will be held on Saturday, June 15, on Mayflower Street from 9:00 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening. At 6:00 p.m. a candlelight vigil will be held in remembrance of loved ones who have lost their lives to the ongoing gun violence in the streets.

The event is a collaboration between Perry “Stickz” Smith, executive director of the Day of Healing organization, a registered non-governmental and non-profit organization in Belize, and leaders of the Mayflower community.

Smith, said that the aim of this Day of Healing is to reopen the lines of communication in the community by bringing residents together in a safe and friendly environment in which they can engage in meaningful conversation and participate in various activities which allow them, particularly young ones, to display their various talents. Ultimately, the objective is to change the image of the community, to reduce crime and violence in the area, and to give people a sense of peace and security.

Smith said that the event will be packed. Throughout the day, the crowd will be entertained by an array of Belizean artists, including Barbie, TR Shine, BlackBerry and Positive Vibes. There will be games for children and storytelling for older ones, as well as a bouncing house for kids, sports and various games and competitions. Trophies and medals will be presented to the first place winners. There will also be food, drinks and refreshments, which will be served free of charge, to the people.

Smith reminds the public that the event is a family day and alcoholic drinks will not be served.

Smith said that donations are requested to ensure the success of event. Funds will be used to buy trophies, to buy food and drinks, and to meet other expenses.

The Day of Healing organization has an account at the Evangel Credit Union, located in the Nazarene High School compound on Princess Margaret Drive, and the account number is 201003939. Anyone wishing to contribute can input a donation in this account.

Those who would like to make a donation or to volunteer at the event can contact Smith at 601- 2342.
Smith reminds those who have experienced the Day of Healing in their communities to come out wearing their Day of Healing shirt to show support and solidarity with the effort of the organization.

In January of this year, the Police Department recognized the positive work of the Day of Healing organization and its contribution to the reduction of murders last year, said Smith, and the organization will continue its work to bring harmony among the community and throughout the city. He urges people to join in and take back and own their communities.

The headquarters of the Day of Healing is at 81 Vernon Street.
