Defining “kleptocracy”

LettersDefining “kleptocracy”

Dear Editor,

In Belize, a cornucopia of fresh fruit, it’s mostly bad apples that seem to never be in short supply; they keep turning up everywhere.

Dominating every governmental ministry are those who believe it’s their privilege – hell – their RIGHT, to enrich themselves while their party is in office. Without a strong judiciary to fear and a disinterested and mostly docile populace too busy trying to scratch out a living, these fat cats must feel like they have died and gone to heaven!

Sure, now and then someone gets caught with their hand in the till, but do they ever go to prison? Are there ever any real consequences for their betrayal of the Belizean people? No, never.

The dictionary defines the noun “kleptocracy” as “government by those who seek chiefly status and personal gain at the expense of the governed.”

If Belize has a different political ideology – after clearing away the smoke and mirrors – what exactly would you call it?

All the best in the struggle for truth.
