BELIZE CITY, Fri. June 23, 2023
On Monday, June 19, the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) appointed Dominique Noralez as its new chairperson.
Noralez’s appointment comes during a challenging period for the LIU which ensued after the passing of its former Chairman, William Dawson, who was noted for his remarkable ability to reach out to the members of the various gangs in the city, in January of this year. Those challenges have included a spike in recidivism.
A graduate of the University of the West Indies, Noralez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Political Science, and her extensive professional experience includes advocacy work, youth development, and active engagement with alternative violence programs.
While acknowledging the huge shoes her predecessors left to be filled, Noralez remains confident that she has the necessary knowledge and support to put into effect the organization’s mission.
“Two things I thought about: first, the person whom I am following. And so, filling those shoes was a huge consideration for me. I’ve been in this space in different positions for quite a while as an advocate, as someone who worked at the Department of Youth, as someone who engaged with alternative violence programs myself,” said Noralez.
Her immediate action plan involves conducting a comprehensive assessment of existing programs and identifying areas that could benefit from improvement or expansion.
However, her ultimate goal is to enhance efficiency within the organization, ensuring beneficiaries receive the support they need and providing a safer society for everyone.
When asked about any intimidation she might feel as a woman stepping into this role, she was direct in her response.
“I am not intimidated at all. In fact, it was a thought I had. Someone brought that question to me earlier. And I am not intimidated at all. I am sure they are confident in my leadership,” she emphasized.
