Elderly man killed in hit-and-run in Belmopan

GeneralElderly man killed in hit-and-run in Belmopan

BELMOPAN, Mon. Mar. 18, 2019– 63-year-old Pablo Hernandez lost his life after a hit-and-run driver knocked him down last night, March 17.

Just before 7 p.m., Hernandez was riding his bicycle on the Hummingbird Highway, inside Belmopan City limits, when a red Honda CRV hit him from behind in front of Caribbean Chicken and the driver did not stop to render aid.

When police canvassed the scene, they found debris from the car and put out an alert to look out for the vehicle. A mechanic then alerted the police after the vehicle was taken in for repairs because the body was damaged.

The car as well as the driver is currently in police custody. Police are unsure if Hernandez had possibly swerved onto the road, causing the driver to hit him. Blood samples were taken from both of them to determine whether alcohol was a factor in this accident.

A person who was in a bar from which Hernandez had departed before the accident, told the media that while Hernandez was in the bar, he had not been drinking. That statement, however, has not yet been verified by police.
