F.C. Belize and BDF post wins in City Champions Cup

SportsF.C. Belize and BDF post wins in City Champions Cup
Both former BPFL teams, F.C. Belize and BDF posted wins on Sunday in the Belize City Champions Cup tournament at the MCC Grounds in Belize City.

In the opener, F.C. Belize made light work of Survivors United, jumping to a 2-nil first half lead on goals from Delwin Jones (39 min) and Francisco Briceno (43 min), and adding 3 more on a second half hat trick by Gilroy “Bredda” Thurton (50, 54 & 65 min), for the 5-nil final score.

The nightcap turned to be quite interesting, as a short-staffed BDF had a surprisingly hard time against Hattieville, who saw the return of their impeccable defensive captain Floyd Jones. Floyd had sat out their last outing due to accumulated yellow yards. Early in second half, Danny Jimenez put BDF on the scorecard with a long, high header that sank into the right corner of the northern goal; but late in the half, Thedran Reid blasted a left foot rocket high in the right corner for the Hattieville equalizer. It wasn’t until near the end that Danny again found the target with a 25-yard right foot ground scorcher near the right goal post that sealed the 2-1 win for BDF.

As expected, BDF and F.C. Belize are at the top of the standings, although West Lake is a perfect 2-0, but they have only played two games so far.

The next games are scheduled for this Sunday, July 17, at the MCC Grounds, as apparently the Super League championship series opener has been postponed.
