Female football fireworks! Semifinals over; Rumberas vs Jewel Fury for NAWL Championship

SportsFemale football fireworks! Semifinals over; Rumberas vs Jewel Fury for NAWL Championship

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Dec. 9, 2019– Women football is reaching a new level in Belize. And the completion of the semifinals of the National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL) 2019-2020 Opening Season this past weekend has set up a long anticipated and eagerly awaited clash between two powerful teams, featuring the two top goal scorers in recent competitions.

Jewel Fury’s Mariela Morales was top goal scorer in this NAWL abbreviated Opening Season regular competition, eclipsing back-to-back top goal scorer, Kaite Jones, who had moved from Gladiators to Rumberas this past season. But in the playoff semifinals, Kaite has again asserted herself, scoring twice in their game 1 semifinals 3-2 win over Verdes Rebels in Cowpen; and early yesterday afternoon at the Norman Broaster Stadium, it was the visiting Rumberas taking the 2-0 victory with another brace from Kaite Jones (18’ & 72’), who now leads all scorers in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, defending champions Jewel Fury, who had eked out a 1-nil road win over Gladiators last Sunday at the People’s Stadium on a late goal by Jayda Brown (89’), was very much in command in their return match at the FFB Stadium yesterday, where they drilled Gladiators, 4-0, with goals from Jesselle Conorque (27’), Jayda Brown (32’ & 41’) and Mariela Morales (75’). Jayda (3 goals) is now 1 goal behind Kaite (4 goals) in the playoffs scoring column.

With the Rumberas’ aggregate 5-2 semifinals victory over Verdes Rebels, and Jewel Fury’s 5-0 aggregate win over Gladiators, it really looks like a female football treat in the best-of-two final series.
