BELIZE CITY, Mon. Sept. 18, 2023

Belize’s Junior National Cycling Team returned home today after its most successful showing at the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic over the weekend.

Gabrielle Gabourel became a national heroine for capturing a gold medal in the female Individual Time Trial and a bronze medal in the Road Race. She finished in the latter in 2 hours, 7 minutes and a second, almost in a virtual tie with Bahamian Kami Lee Roach the silver medalist, and a mere 21 seconds behind Melsey Yamely Perez Vega, host Dominican Republic’s gold medalist.

In the male category, Jaylen Briceno also secured the bronze in the Individual Time Trial while Devyn Major was 7th in the ITT Youth and 8th in the Youth Road Race. Delton Rojas was 9th in the Junior Road Race. Belize ranked 4th overall in medal count with 3 medals out of a possible 24.

It is the first time a Belizean has won a gold medal in a regional junior cycling competition.
