DANGRIGA, Stann Creek District, Wed. July 10, 2024

After fighting for his life for a little over three days, a Dangriga resident who on Friday, July 5 was thrown to the ground when his motorbike hit a dead cow near Mile 4 on the Southern Highway, passed away due to his injuries.

It is being reported that the cow was killed at around 11:00 p.m. that Friday, when a pickup heading to Dangriga Town hit it while it was wandering in the middle of the street. The dead cow was reportedly hit again by another pickup truck after it was placed on the opposite side of the road, and it was shortly after that second hit that 26-year-old Lokenver Montero, who was riding a motorcycle, approached and collided with the dead cow. This caused him to lose control of the motorbike, and he was flung onto the pavement.

He suffered head and body injuries and was taken to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he remained hospitalized until his passing on Tuesday, July 9.

Reports are also indicating that residents of the area had seen the cow wandering alongside the highway some hours before it was hit. Stray animals on the highway, some of which escape from their owners, are a serious hazard, especially at night, as they are at risk of being killed by oncoming vehicles which may also result in the loss of life of the driver and passengers.
