BELIZE CITY, Wed. Mar. 1, 2023

Two Fridays ago, February 24, the six district primary school volleyball champions all converged at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Complex in Orange Walk Town to compete for the 2023 National Primary School Volleyball Championship. The tournament, which began back on January 18 with the individual district primary school championships, was being hosted by the National Sports Council.

The 6 district champion teams – Toledo Christian Academy (TCA), San Juan Bosco RC (Stann Creek), Santa Elena Primary (Cayo), Holy Redeemer School (Belize), Louisiana Government School (Orange Walk), and Mary Hill RC (Corozal) – were divided into two groups of 3, with each group then playing a single round-robin, from which the top 2 teams from each group would advance to the semifinals.

In Group 1 results: Holy Redeemer over Louisiana Gov’t, 25-7, 25-14; Holy Redeemer over Toledo Christian Academy (TCA), 25-15, 5-9; and TCA over Louisiana Gov’t, 25-22, 29-27. Louisiana Gov’t eliminated.

And in Group 2: Santa Elena Primary over Mary Hill RC, 25-16, 25-17; San Juan Bosco RC over Mary Hill RC, 25-19, 19-25, 15-3; San Juan Bosco RC over Santa Elena Primary, 25-17, 25-12. Mary Hill RC eliminated.

In the semifinals, TCA defeated San Juan Bosco RC, 25-13, 18-25, 15-12; and Holy Redeemer won over Santa Elena Girls, 25-10, 25-8.

In the consolation match for 3rd place, Santa Elena Girls prevailed over San Juan Bosco RC, 25-22, 25-9.

And in the championship final, it was Holy Redeemer Girls becoming back-to-back national champions as they defeated Toledo Christian Academy, 25-7, 25-20.

Final results: 1st Place – Holy Redeemer School (Belize); 2nd Toledo Christian Academy; 3rd Santa Elena Primary School; and 4th San Juan Bosco RC (Stann Creek).

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams received team trophies and individual medals, and the Most Valuable Player award went to TCA’s Shaneil Flores.
