Kremandala Karate Club gets under way

FeaturesKremandala Karate Club gets under way
During the summer break a group of young children began studying karate under the leadership of Mark Welch, a well known sense, who holds a black belt and has trained a number of Belizean youth in the past. The karate lessons were sponsored by KREM Radio and were held on top of the Kremandala rooftop. The KREM karate summer classes were free of cost to the participants.

Now KREM Radio has gone an extra mile to contribute to the continued karate training of the children who participated in its summer program. This past Saturday, about thirteen youngsters braved the inclement weather and found themselves again on the Kremandala rooftop for more karate lessons.

A total of thirty-one children are registered for the new KREM’s Karate Club. The fee is $5.00 per month and only the children who participated in the summer program are being catered for.

Lisa “Love” Kerr, an announcer at KREM Radio, is one of the coordinators for the Karate Club. Kerr told Amandala that when she returned from vacation over the summer she found the children taking karate training on the rooftop. Kerr said that the newly formed KREM Karate Club will meet each Saturday for two hours, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. “Right now we are working on getting the children their uniforms to workout in.”

KREM Radio’s manager, Michael Hyde, said that, “We are going to work with the kids and hopefully we will be able to take them to the Olympics someday.” Hyde went on to say that they don’t want it to be a one-shot affair. The club will be registered with the Karate Association of Belize, he said.
