Laborer, 26, sentenced to 2 years for caressing leg of stepdaughter, 19

GeneralLaborer, 26, sentenced to 2 years for caressing leg of stepdaughter, 19
A caress of the left leg and thigh of his 19-year-old stepdaughter became a costly act for Kraal Road labourer, Anthony Williams, 26. Today in the #6 Magistrate’s Court, he was found guilty of aggravated assault and sentenced to two years by Magistrate Harrison Hewlett.

The charge against Williams arose from an incident that occurred about 10:30 a.m. on January 6, 2007.

The complainant, who is a waitress at a local bar, testified that she was at home lying on her side in a sofa watching television, when she fell asleep.

She said she awoke when she felt a hand creeping up her leg and thigh and heading up her shorts for her vagina.

She said when she opened her eyes and jumped up, she saw that the person was her stepfather.

The woman testified that her stepfather ran towards the bathroom and she picked up a vase, threw it at him and it struck him on the side of the face. But despite being hit, Williams managed to run out of the house, said the woman.

Before the incident, Williams was gambling outside with a next-door neighbor.

The complainant’s mother, who was Williams’ common-law wife, was not at home at the time. She had gone to the market.

Williams did not challenge his stepdaughter’s testimony. But he gave a sworn statement in which he claimed that a little girl between the ages of 4 and 5 was between the woman’s legs while she was on the sofa sleeping.

Hewlett did not believe Williams’ testimony. He was satisfied that the prosecution, represented by Sergeant Frank Augustine, had proved the charge against Williams, and so he found Williams guilty.

Williams was not represented by an attorney.
