ORANGE WALK TOWN, Tues. Sep. 1, 2020– Joaquin Perez, 22, a laborer of Louisiana, Orange Walk Town, died after being stabbed in his chest, his abdomen and his nose, by another man in front of a shop not far from his house at about 12:30 this afternoon.
After the stabbing, the man who inflicted the wounds on Perez fled the scene. Perez then stumbled back to his home, and he was rushed by his family members to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Perez’s family said that he had just arrived home after a day of work, and when he had finished eating, he went to the nearby shop to buy phone credit, and that was when he was attacked by a man with a knife.
Perez had a machete on his bicycle, but those who witnessed the incident said that while Perez was trying to retrieve the machete, he fell, and that was when the man stabbed him and ran.
His family believes that he was targeted, because the man who stabbed him was seen on the street near their house that morning, looking at their house and in the yard. They could not identify his face because he was wearing a mask.
A relative of Perez said that before becoming a father to his 2-year-old daughter and transitioning to a low-key family life with his common-law wife, Perez had been a “street boy” and a troublemaker, but he had changed his life, and only went from work to home and from home to work.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, said that an investigation into the fatal stabbing has begun, and they are looking for two men in connection with Perez’s murder. The motive for the senseless killing has not yet been established.
