On July 7, 2013, KREM Television aired its first live news broadcast. It was the birth of an initiative that was long in the making, but worth the wait.

KREM TV live news is a project led by KREM TV and supported by the entire Kremandala organization. Sharon Marin-Lewis, production manager, said the idea originally came from the executives of the organization and had been in planning for some time but never materialized.

The current management team of KREM TV was informed of the plans once again, and it was decided that implementation of the idea should no longer be put off.

Marin-Lewis said that she is excited about the new dimension of KREM TV.

“We came up with a formula that was fool-proof and that is to ensure that we use the resources available at Amandala and KREM Radio,” she said. “KREM TV would not have been able to pull off having the launch of the news in such a quick space. We did it in six weeks; from the time of brainstorming to the delivery date was six weeks flat.”

Eventually there will be a Saturday broadcast, but until that time comes, KREM TV news will be a six-day production. The news will be aired live from Sunday to Friday, starting at 6:00 p.m.

“I wanted it to be seven days week because the news does not sleep,” Marin-Lewis said. “I wanted KREM TV to be the entity that would be telling the nation at every turn what’s happening on any given day. It is my aim and goal that in the not too distant future, we’re going to have news seven days a week.”

Marin-Lewis said that having Sunday news will set KREM TV news apart from its competitors.

“Number one, you’re talking about ‘backa di Zinc Fence,’ so that in itself is a separate type of compilation of talent,” she said. “But besides that, from the mere fact that we’re having the news on a Sunday is different. There’s no other media house, as far as I know, that gives news on the weekend on TV.”

The media house will air a special feature report every Sunday as well as a special international feature daily.

“We’ll look at stories from around the world and we try to tie [it] into what is going on in Belize, because Belize is a part of the global community and many times we overlook that,” Marin-Lewis said.

The KREM TV News staff includes Linda Blease, creativity manager; Edward “Bart” Sanchez, technical operations manager; Nathalie McKenzie, marketing manager; Samiyyah Andrewin, assistant production manager; Keran Rocke, director; and Maryam Abul-Qawiyy and Esmelli Almendarez, who are the news anchors.
