Dear Sir,

I did three tours running the army helicopters in Belize. Much of that time was spent keeping an eye on the Guatemalan border, and resupplying our troops based there. If we had not defended Belize, the Guatemalans would simply have walked in down the road from Melchor.

Belize becoming a republic removes any obligation for the UK to support Belize. The US supports Guatemala. Belize becoming a republic seems an invitation to be incorporated into Guatemala, which has always wanted an opening onto the Caribbean.
