One dead, one injured in Hattieville shooting

GeneralOne dead, one injured in Hattieville shooting

HATTIEVILLE, Belize District, Sat. Sept. 5, 2020– At about 10:20 last night, a gunman crept up to the bedroom window of a couple who were watching the news on TV in their bedroom in the Windmill area of  Hattieville.

The gunman opened the louvers of the window and fired multiple times into the bedroom, hitting Oniel Ferguson, 23, a laborer of Hattieville, about 8 times while he was lying on the bed. Rhondine Gillett, 33, a domestic, was hit in her arm.

The couple’s neighbours told police that about 12 shots were fired into the bedroom. When the shooting was over, Ferguson, who had been hit in the head, chest and abdomen, lay dead on the bed.

Gillett, who was wounded in the arm, was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she was admitted in a serious but stable condition, while Ferguson’s body was taken to the morgue.

Police recovered 12 expended 9mm shells, 2 slugs and a fragment from the scene of the shooting. So far, the motive for the shooting is not known.

In March this year, a wanted poster was issued for Ferguson’s arrest for the crime of being a gang member for the purpose of committing serious offences.

Police later captured him in Hattieville.
