ORANGE WALK, Thurs. May 8, 2025

The Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) has suspended three players after the disciplinary committee of the association found them guilty of hurling racial slurs at a player.

The incident occurred during a football match between Yo Creek United FC and Mi Gente FC on Sunday, May 4, when a player from Mi Gente FC claimed that players from Yo Creek started hurling racial slurs at him throughout the game.

He first reported the incident to the referee, who seemingly had not heard the comments and was thus dismissive about the complaints. However, the slurs continued throughout the game to the point at which the victim no longer wanted to play in the game.

The game was thus suspended at the 82-minute mark, as was reported by the match commissioner. After reviewing the situation, the OWFA disciplinary committee decided to suspend all three Yo Creek United FC players involved for one year and seven months, and to prohibit them from participating in any OWFA-sanctioned tournaments until January 2027.

While all decisions are final, the OWFA mentioned that additional punishment will be imposed by the Football Federation of Belize (FFB).
