Playoffs near in National Amateur Women’s League

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 4, 2017–Only a couple weeks remain before playoffs, as Week 6 games were played over the weekend in the National Amateur Women’s League 2017 football tournament. Two games were played on Saturday, April 29, and 1 on Sunday, April 30.

On Saturday at the FFB Stadium, the capital city’s Jewel Fury crushed Griga Smart Pumas, 10-1, behind goals from Iris Centeno (12’, 36’, 45’ & 60’), Jayda Brown (49’, 75’ & 89’), Beatriz Alfaro (77’), Delmi Cornelio (85’) and Ashley Rodriguez (90+’); while Pumas’ lone goal was from a penalty by Ethel Martinez (889’ PK). Meanwhile, at the Santa Elena Sporting Complex, the visiting Belize City FC came from behind to clip home standing Gentle Touch, 2-1, with a goal each from Cynthia Salazar (53’) and Shanell Gentle (73’), after Vicky Ponce (35’) had given Gentle Touch the first half lead.

In the only game on Sunday, at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk, the home team, Gladiators turned back the invading Calcutta Strikers, 6-0, with goals from Julia Puerto (11’ & 27’), Karen Garcia (21’ & 66’), Maria Acosta (84’) and Noriely Terry (90’). The other scheduled game between Sagitun Strikers and Toledo Strikers was postponed and will be played as a back match before the start of the playoffs. (See current standings below.)

The single round-robin regular season is over, except for 3 back matches, 2 of which are scheduled for this coming weekend.

Sunday, May 7, back matches
3:30 p.m. – Calcutta Strikers vs Belize City FC – Carolina Field
4:00 p.m. – Sagitun Strikers vs Jewel Fury – M.A. Stadium
