On Friday, May 3, a month after the daytime execution of 43-year-old Elwin “Ras Bobo” Lewis of Plues Street, Belize City, who was a former street figure of the George Street gang, his alleged killer was charged by police.
Lewis had reportedly ventured into enemy turf on Antelope Street Extension on a motorcycle to collect an LIU (Leadership Intervention Unit) payment shortly after 4:00 p.m. While he was exiting from the area, as he was passing in front of Gwen Lizarraga High School and heading to Central American Boulevard, his assailant, reported to be 22-year-old Travis Jamaal Herbert of Belize City, who was also on a motorcycle, drew near to Lewis and fired multiple shots at him.
Lewis died at the scene and was pronounced dead after 5:00 p.m. at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
In the wake of Lewis’ death, Dominique Noralez, Chairperson for the LIU, spoke highly of him in an interview with the media.
According to Noralez, Lewis had plans to transform an area in the southside of Belize City into a park to prevent children from being caught up in gang life.
The Belize Police Department announced that Herbert was charged with the murder on Friday, May 3.
