Corozal Town, Mon. Sept. 13, 2021– On Sunday, September 12, shortly before 7:00 p.m., police officers in Corozal Town visited a location between Tower Street and 7th Avenue where a road traffic accident had taken place. When they arrived, they saw a female victim being placed into an ambulance.

The accident victim was later identified as 68-year-old Julia Hilda Marie Gongora, a former school teacher. She was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital, where, at around 10:00 that morning she passed away as a result of the injuries she received in the accident.

Police learned, after carrying out an initial investigation, that Gongora was riding her bicycle in a southward direction when a vehicle driven by a male person identified as Pankaj Kuma, 40, who was on 3rd Street heading towards College Road, hit Gongora at the intersection of the two roads.

The incident sent Gongora falling to the divider, where she sustained severe injuries. The police have since apprehended Kumar. He has since been arrested and charged with one count of Causing Death by Careless Conduct. He is said to be a sales clerk of Altamira Area, Corozal Town Specimen. Samples were taken from Kumar to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
