The slow return to normalcy, and for me, the end of the Trump era, is finally here! The citizens of the State of Georgia, where Republicans outnumber Democrats by a large margin, decided to pick sanity over crazy. The Republican Party, as clueless as ever, with a big assist from “der Fuhrer”, decided to run an unqualified, almost illiterate black man against one of the most dignified black candidates that ever ran for higher office. Most Georgians saw this as an insult to their intelligence, and repudiated this insult by electing the most qualified, the most honorable candidate to represent them in the Senate. Georgians, black and white, denied Trump and his acolytes a chance to lead America into more chaos, more crazy, and into a more contentious society!

I personally am not a big fan of Joe Biden, but he has accomplished what no other president since Roosevelt in 1934 has done! He did not lose a single Senate seat in a midterm election! He has been misunderestimated, a term coined by George W. Bush, many times over. He has turned politics upside down, winning where he should be losing, both legislatively and electorally. He has confounded his detractors, other nations, and I believe, even himself. He has to be given major credit, speaking and campaigning for democracy, even as the barrage of negativity launched against him by the Republicans, continues unabated and mercilessly!

This nation has been teetering on the edge of fascism, flirted with authoritarianism, but in the end recognized the value of common sense and stability over a disruptive state of being. We pulled back from the edge and drove a stake through the heart of Trumpism, and all the other isms that aren’t, and will never be, this new America! The American dream, which lately has been more a dream rather than a reality, continues to thrive! I know some will say that I’m being optimistic, but I know, deep down inside me, that Trump will soon be just a figment of our imagination, that those who still ardently follow him will become outcasts, rather than any movement of significance!

America is changing, the old and and intransigent are dying, or falling into oblivion, while the multi-cultured, the optimists, the changing faces of this American landscape are taking over. Political, environmental, social and economic changes are advancing at an encouraging pace! Hopefully the young, the progressives, and a society that no longer cares about what clan one belongs to, but how the country might become more equitable to all its citizens, will take over, and form a more perfect union!

Like I’ve always said, I am a dreamer.

Glen
