Two shot, one dead in Arlington Drive shooting

GeneralTwo shot, one dead in Arlington Drive shooting

BELIZE CITY. Mon. Oct. 3, 2022

A 29-year-old man lost his life early Friday morning following a shooting at the corner of Arlington Drive and McKenzie Lane around 8:00 on Thursday night. The victim has been identified as Kevin Gillett, who reportedly had gone to make a purchase at the shop and somehow was standing at the intersection with a group of men when a gunman came out of a yard and opened fire on the group.

Also shot was Glenford “Slim” Soberanis, who was hit in the leg and subsequently discharged himself from the hospital on the morning after the incident. Gillett, however, who was shot in the shoulder, according to members of his family, did not survive despite being in a stable condition following the shooting.

His common-law wife believes that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, but his family is still puzzled over his death, wondering how someone could die from a wound to the shoulder. Police suspect that individuals from the Antelope Street area may have some link to this murder, since Commissioner Chester Williams claimed in an interview on Saturday that “the past three murders in the city has been committed by them.”

Stringent measures will be put in place to curb the growing violence in the area and across Belize City, COMPOL Williams said. It must be noted that groups of young men frequently can be seen in the area where Gillett was shot.

The family of Kevin Gillett remains shocked at the loss of his life in this manner, since they always viewed him as a humble young man. A police investigation into this killing is ongoing.
