BELIZE CITY, Wed. Mar. 30, 2022– On Saturday, March 26, on the heels of the lifting of most Covid-19 restrictions and the resumption of contact sports, the Corozal Sports Council, along with the Corozal Town Council, launched the first day of its U15 basketball camp at the Andres Campos Civic Center. The U15 camp is aimed at imparting skills training and self-discipline to its young participants.
Hailal Jundi, camp coordinator, is projecting that the number of camp attendees—a total of 20 at the start of the camp— will keep increasing after the end of each session.
“What we are planning to do for the next session, I brought it up to the chairman along with the Mayor, is that maybe on Saturday we can hold 2 – 3 sessions, because I’m sure, and I know by next week there will be a lot of children that would want participate and to be a part of the camp. So what we are going to do, we’re going ask 2 [or] 3 persons to assist us, so one person will hold in the morning from 10:00 to 11:00, second person from 12:00 to 1:00 and the third person will hold from 3:00 to 4:00 so that we don’t let anybody down,” said Jundi.
Rigo Vellos, the mayor of Corozal Town, also spoke exclusively with AMANDALA about the significance of the U15 camp for the kids and the town of Corozal.
“We know we’ve been locked up for two years and change, so it was a great feeling knowing that we can finally go back to some type of normalcy. We have started with the football camp here in Corozal, and now today, it’s the first day of basketball camp, under 15 and we’re so grateful for that. I know our youth have been waiting for so long for an opportunity to go out and play some type of sport. Today, we have kids [from] all walks of life, and kids that love basketball but have not got the opportunity to learn the basics, and we have kids that know the basics and just want to improve. It’s all about having fun and finding ways to keep them occupied so they don’t go about lingering doing the wrong things. We want to invest in our youth and this is one way how the [Corozal] Town Council has found a way to be able to reach out and invest through sports,” said Mayor Vellos.
The camp will be a recurring event on Saturdays.
