BELIZE CITY, Thurs. July 13, 2023

A murder charge has been brought against 23-year-old Daisy Lopez, who is accused of brutally stabbing her sister-in-law, Rosita Olivera, 52, on Monday in Progresso Village, Corozal.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, July 10, during a heated domestic dispute, and has left a family shattered and a community in shock.

According to Karen Romero, Olivera’s niece, who provided a detailed account of the incident, Lopez was involved in an intense argument with her common-law husband, William Olivera (the victim’s brother) in the hour leading up to the tragedy (around midnight).

The argument reportedly reached a point where Lopez called the police, and demanded her children’s documents from Olivera. When Rosita Olivera attempted to intervene in the dispute, Lopez, in a fit of rage, is reported to have brandished a knife and fatally stabbed Olivera multiple times in the chest and face. Rosita Olivera was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Lopez has now been formally charged with murder, following an initial investigation by police.
