George Price Highway, Cayo District, Fri. May 14, 2021– A traffic accident on the George Price Highway on Friday, May 14, left one woman dead and several other people injured.
According to police reports, officers were notified that an accident had occurred between Miles 44 and 45 of the George Price Highway sometime before 6:00 p.m., and they went to the scene. The officers, upon doing a preliminary investigation, found out that Earlyn Young of an Orange Walk address had been driving a Chevy Equinox that ultimately overturned on the side of the road.
Young was attempting to overtake a truck while he was heading in the western direction, but the presence of a Santander truck parked at the shoulder of the road made it impossible for him to complete the attempt. Young eventually lost control of the vehicle, which reportedly flipped several times.
At the scene of the accident, police found the apparently lifeless body of Ronda Burgess, 40. They also came across several other passengers of the Chevy Equinox who had been injured as a result of the accident. All surviving passengers have been treated and released from the Western Regional Hospital.
Young has also been served a notice of intended prosecution. Police were not able to obtain samples of Young’s blood to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, since the injuries he had received caused him to bleed profusely, making it impossible to further extract blood samples according to police. The Police Department also noted that the Santander truck that was parked on the roadside remains a key part of the investigation.
