8-Ball Billiards in Belize – a veteran reflects

Highlights8-Ball Billiards in Belize – a veteran reflects

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Aug. 20, 2018– I remember coming back home in 1984, trying to find a pool room where I could play some billiards; and Mike’s Club was recommended to me, only to find out that Mike’s Club was only for carom.

So I took it upon myself, bought a billiards table, and put it downstairs of my home; and, to my surprise, the guys started showing up; and I started having weekend tournaments for individuals.

Then, Mr. Isaac Ranguy from Punta Gorda got in touch with me. He brought a team of seven players to compete against seven players from Catt’s Place, Belize City. This was history in the making. (P.G.’s team was named Challengers.)

Today, Belize District has fifteen teams, and each other district has nothing less than five teams. Add to that San Pedro and Belmopan; all having their own association, governed by the Belize Billiards Sports Federation.

Billiards is no longer on the back burner; and the proof will be in Belmopan this Saturday and Sunday with teams representing their districts (in the Belikin 8-Ball Nationals).

I think it is about time that we try and get one or two of these players to the Commonwealth or Central American Games.
