BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 10, 2018– Five Belize City Council employees were terminated on Tuesday, as Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner began to steer the council into what has been described as its restructuring phase.

Two of the terminated workers are members of the Christian Workers Union (CWU) and their termination brought a swift reaction from the newly elected CWU president, Mose Hyde, who spoke out against the termination on his KREM Radio/TV Wake Up Belize yesterday morning.

Hyde told listeners that his union has already written a letter to the City Council on behalf of its two terminated members, which the Council has confirmed that it received yesterday.

The two terminated union members are the Council’s Sanitation Department supervisor Cecil Jenkins, Sr., and the Supervisor of Parks and Playgrounds, Shana Whyte.

Other terminated City Council employees are Whitney Waight, the Parks and Playgrounds Coordinator; Lisbeth Butler, the manager in the Office of the Mayor; and Wayne Samuels, brother of the former UDP councilor Dean Samuels.
