GeneralCorpse retrieved from the Mopan River buried as “John Doe.”

A corpse that was floating in the Mopan River in Benque Viejo about 9:30 this morning has been retrieved. Due to its state of decomposition, a post-mortem exam was conducted at the scene of the discovery, and the cause of death was certified to be drowning. Foul play was ruled out.

The unidentified man, who appeared to be of Creole descent, was buried in Benque later today after the autopsy.

About 9:30 this morning, a man who was walking in the area saw the corpse floating on the banks of the river, and called the police.

Assistant Superintendent Dinsdale Thompson, Commander of Benque Viejo Police, told reporters that
photos of the man were taken (not suited for the media due to the state of the corpse ), and these are available for viewing at the Benque Viejo Police Station, so that the body can be properly identified and given to the deceased man’s family.
