Basketball Finals Friday – Jane Usher Ballerz vs Complex Unruly Ballerz

There are a whole lot of games being played in a short time in the Conscious Youth Development Program (CYDP) U-18 Football and Basketball Summer Tournaments, and we have had some confusion with the scores, thus our reluctance to report on the games so far. Here is our best effort to record the accomplishments of the youths in these tournaments. The basketball Finals take place tomorrow, Friday, while the football Finals are scheduled for next week Friday.

U-18 FOOTBALL

The CYDP U-18 Summer Football Tournament 2013 kicked off on Monday, July 29, at the Hostel Field behind the Racoon Street Police Station, with Joshua Bombers clipping Survivors United, 1-nil, on a goal by Jahron Myvett.

There are 7 teams in the competition: Joshua Bombers, Survivors United, Lake-I Strikers, Jane Usher FC, Hattieville United, Victoria Strikers and Heights FC.

On Tuesday, Lake Independence Strikers dropped Jane Usher FC, 3-2. Calvin Reneau netted 2 for Lake-I, who also benefitted from an auto goal by Jane Usher. Both Jane Usher goals were scored by Kareem Williams.

In game 1 on Wednesday, Hattieville United bombed Victoria Street Strikers, 6-1, with 3 goals from Kenyon Lewis and 1 each from Keithon Dyer and Richard Waight, along with an auto goal from Victoria Street. Joseph Martinez scored the only goal for Victoria Street. In game 2, it was Lake Independence Strikers, 2-0, over Joshua Bombers. Calvin Reneau and (name unknown) scored for Lake I.

In the opener today, Thursday, Survivors United defeated Victoria Street (4-0?) with 2 goals from Jamal Ford and 1 apiece from Gaynel Vernon and Tyrique Suazo. The nightcap was not played, as Heights won by default over Joshua Bombers.

Game 1 on Friday, August 2, saw Jane Usher FC defeating Hattieville United, 4-2. Kareem Williams had a hat trick (3 goals) and Michael Lambey added another for Jane Usher, while Richard Waight and Kenyon Lewis netted a goal apiece for Hattieville. And in game 2, Heights clipped Lake-I Strikers, 2-1, with goals from Darren Myers and James Fitzgibbon; while Lake-I’s only goal was by Dennis Zuniga.

In the first game on Monday, August 5, Survivors United won, 3-2, over Jane Usher FC. Tyrique Vernon, Khambrel Blease and Jamal Ford got 1 apiece for Survivors; while Kareem Williams and Michael Lambey scored 1 each for Jane Usher. The nightcap saw Heights defeating Hattieville United, 1-0, on a goal by Darren Myers.

In the scheduled opener on Tuesday, Victoria Street won by default over Joshua Bombers. Then it was Hattieville United defeating Survivors, 3-2, with 2 goals from Richard Waight and 1 from Devaughn Zuniga. Survivors got a goal each from Jamal Ford and Tyrique Vernon.

In the only game on Wednesday, Heights FC clipped Survivors United, 2-1, with a goal from Kelker Palacio and an auto goal from Survivors. The lone Survivors goal was by (?). In the scheduled nightcap game, Lake Independence Strikers won by default over Victoria Street.

In game 1 today, Thursday, August 8, Hattieville United bombed Independence Strikers, 4-1, with a goal apiece from Naim Wilson, Richard Waight, Trevaun Rhaburn and Troy Augustus. The lone tally for Independence was by Francis Arana. In today’s nightcap, Jane Usher won by default over Joshua Bombers.

There are no games scheduled for tomorrow, Friday.

Knockout Round – football

Next week Wednesday, August 14, will be the Knockout Round.

Thursday, August 15, will be 3rd place match and the first leg of the best-of-two games series for the championship.

Friday, August 16, is the 2nd and last leg of the championship, after which monetary prizes and trophies will be distributed.

1st place takes home $300.00 with team trophy, individual medals and individual prizes.

2nd place gets $250.00 with team trophy and individual medals.

3rd place receives a team trophy and individual medals.

U-18 BASKETBALL

The CYDP U-18 Summer Basketball Tournament tipped off on Tuesday, July 30, with two games played. In the opener, Penn Road Ballerz edged Yabra Raiderz, 52-50; and in the nightcap it was Complex Unruly Ballerz defeating 123rd Ballerz, 37-26.

There are 8 teams in the tournament, and they are divided into two groups: Group A – Rising Starz, Freedom Street Ballerz, Yabra Raiderz and Penn Road Ballerz; and Group B – Complex Unruly Ballerz, 123rd Ballerz, Jane Usher Ballerz and Northside Ballerz.

On Wednesday, Rising Starz clipped Freedom Street Ballerz by only 1 point, 50-49; and Jane Usher Ballerz beat North Side Ballerz, 46-37.

On Thursday, it was Yabra Raiderz, 47-26, over Freedom Street Ballerz in the opener; and in the nightcap, Complex Unruly Ballerz crushed Northside Ballerz, 67-26.

Friday’s games saw Rising Starz crushing Penn Road Ballerz, 43-26, and Jane Usher Ballerz edging 123rd Ballerz, 45-42.

On Monday, August 5, Rising Starz defeated Yabra Raiderz, 33-29, and Complex Unruly Ballerz squeaked by Jane Usher Ballerz, 44-43.

On Tuesday it was Freedom Street Ballerz over Penn Road Ballerz, 49-43. The scheduled game between Iguana Street Ballerz and 123rd Ballerz was not played.

Knockout Round – basketball

The CYDP U-18 Basketball Competition continued on Wednesday, August 7, with 4 teams advancing to the Knockout Round, where the #1 ranked team from Group A played the #2 ranked team from Group B, and the #1 ranked team from Group B played the #2 ranked team from Group A.

In game 1, Complex Unruly Ballerz defeated Rising Starz, 51-47. Francis Arana had 18 pts 5 stls and Alejandro Baptist 15 pts 6 rebs to secure the win for Complex. In the losing effort for Rising Starz, Shaquille Crawford had 14 pts 10 rebs and Darnell Galvez 13 pts 5 assts 5 rebs 5 stls.

Game 2 saw Jane Usher Ballerz defeating Freedom Street Ballerz, 47-39, behind Aleem Richardson 16 pts and Albert Longsworth 13 pts 7 rebs, while Justin Hyde had 18 pts and Jarvis Tench 16 pts 12 rebs in the losing effort for Freedom Street.

The two losers played for 3rd place today, Thursday, at Maud Williams High School; and the results just in say that Rising Starz defeated Freedom Street Ballerz, 39-30, to clinch 3rd place. Leading Rising Starz were Shaquille Crawford 9 pts 8 rebs and Keon Evans 6 pts 9 rebs; while Freedom Street Ballerz was led by Jarvis Tench with 14 pts 13 rebs.

The two winning teams from Wednesday will play for 1st and 2nd place tomorrow, Friday, at 2:00 p.m. at Maud Williams High School – Jane Usher Ballerz vs Complex Unruly Ballerz.
