Leocadio Valentin Cobb, 49, of Xaibe, Corozal District, died after he was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver at about 10:00 p.m. Monday night, June 30, on the Xaibe Road.
Cobb was found lying on the roadside with massive head and body injuries.
Police took him to the Corozal Hospital, after which he was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he fought for his life, but died yesterday morning in the Intensive Care Unit while doctors were treating him. The body has since been deposited at the morgue for an autopsy to be carried out to certify the cause of his death.
Police, however, say that the investigation is impeded by their inability to obtain a statement from Cobb, since he was in a coma when he was found.
In an interview on CTV3, Cobb’s family member said that she was at home that night when she heard a loud bang and ran outside to see what was happening.
She saw a vehicle moving away slowly. The family went into the area, but saw nothing, and they went back into their house, but the dogs began barking, and they went out again, and that was when they saw Cobb lying injured unconscious in the bushes near the roadside.
The ambulance was called. The relative reported that when police picked him up off the road, Cobb’s head was bloody and an eye was extending out of its socket
Police say that they have a description of the vehicle which hit Cobb, and they are currently trying to locate it, and are seeking public assistance to find the driver. Anyone who knows anything that could be useful to the police investigation into the accident is urged to call 911, the police or 0800 -922- TIPS.
Leocadio Cobb was the father of one daughter.
