This weekend?s games Sunday March 13:
San Pedro Sea Hawks vs Calcutta Bulls – Ambergris Stadium –
3:00 p.m.

Cayo Avengers vs Juventus – Norman Broaster Stadium – 3:30 p.m.

Print Belize Griga vs Sagitun – Carl Ramos Stadium – 3:30 p.m.

Kulture Yabra vs Kremandala Lake – MCC Grounds – 4:00 p.m.

Former Juventus and Griga United superstriker, Elroy Kuylen, got his fifth goal of the season 29 minutes into the second half, courtesy of a pass from his good friend and teammate, Kareem Haylock, who served it up from the left flank for the game?s only goal. Kuylen was able to rise up above the defenders to place it in the back of the net with a header. Kuylen?s goal has now put him in the no. 1 spot as the league?s top gunner.

Up North at the Calcutta field, Kulture Yabra got shocked for the second time by the upstart Bulls. If you can recall, the Bulls were the ones who bumped Yabra from getting a shot at going into the playoffs last tournament. Sunday?s game served as reminder to all other teams that this Calcutta team – as we had alluded to in last week?s edition of Amandala Sports Page – is for real and can?t be taken for granted. Kulture Yabra or not, the Calcutta Bulls are prepared to run.

Even though Yabra drew first blood on a goal from Jerome ?Jarro? James just before the half in the 45thminute, the Bulls regrouped. The ?Tilliman? Nunez to ?Jarro? James call could easily become the favorite for play-by-play announcers because that?s how Kulture got their first goal, in similar fashion to the goal ?Jarro? scored last week against Juventus? Charlie Slusher, where he flipped the ball over Charlie?s head. ?Jarro? was able to duplicate the shot against Calcutta goalkeeper, Giovanni Rodriguez. This time, he found the ?V? and the back of the net for the one nil Yabra lead.

That didn?t seem to have any effect on the Bulls. One minute into the second half, Calcutta?s veteran superstar, Estevan Hall, found Derwin Innis lurking inside the six-yard box. Innis dug a hole, instructed ?Zabel? Rowley, the Yabra goalie, not to move and placed it to the left for the equalizer. Thirty-four minutes later, in the 79thminute, Estevan drove up the right side, escaped from Kulture defender Edmund ?Dubu? Thomas, and was also able to freeze Rowley, for the 2?1 Calcutta lead. Yabra pressed on for the equalizer, but once again got burned in the 90thminute when Derwin Innis got a low header pass ?Zabel.? And, that was all she wrote: the fat lady belted out her tune – ?Yabra Ghost Deh Ya.?

A Yabra insider confirmed to the paper that ?Zabel? Rowley was not in the best of health in Calcutta, and that could be what hampered his performance just a week after he got rave reviews from sportscasters and writers last week for his job against Juventus at the MCC Garden. At press time we were unable to confirm his condition, but we were reliably informed that he was receiving medical attention.

A few miles South from the Calcutta field, Juventus were giving the San Pedro Seahawks a run for their money at the People?s Stadium in Orange Walk Town. Early in the game, at the 19thminute, Kenny Chi ran up the left side and served up an assist to Harrison ?Kafu? Roches, who placed it to the left of San Pedro goalie, William Johnson.

Juventus kept up the pressure and it paid off in the 41stminute when Donnie Tun scored off a spot kick that was deflected off San Pedro defender, Jarbi Alvarez, confusing goalkeeper Johnson.

This was a tale of two halves. The first half was dominated by Juventus, while the second belonged to the Seahawks. Late in the second half, San Pedro completely dominated the game and squandered many scoring opportunities with Landy Pinelo missing a couple. Pinelo had two good breaks in front of the Juventus goal but missed. The one that he wished he could have re-played, was a gift where Juventus keeper Charlie Slusher was completely beaten. Landy was surprised by the open goal, and held on for a second. By the time he pulled trigger, Slusher was back in position for the save to get the 2 nil shutout win.

Got milk? No! Need points? Yes! Check Griga. Here in the city, Kremandala Lake picked up an important win even though it?s against the cellar-dwelling Print Belize Griga squad, who continue to give up points not because they want to, but simply because they need some veterans to lead this young, talented team to another level.

Griga defender, Fabian Martinez, was called for a hand ball just inside the 18-yard box 16 minutes into the game, but Kremandala missed the opportunity to get the first goal when Jermaine ?Bowfoot? Zuniga kicked wide left, missing the penalty. ?Bowfoot? redeemed himself on a feed from David ?Manu? McCauley just two minutes later, splitting the defenders and firing it low under the arms of Griga goalkeeper, Kevin Dawson, who had come out to defend.

Matching speed with speed, Griga?s Anthony Flores beat an offside trap on the assist from Ryan Simpson. KremLake goalie, Derol Roches, came out for the save, but Flores faked him out of position and could have walked into an open net if he wanted to. Game tied, 1 ? 1.

Just before the halftime whistle, Deon McCaulay got a service from Dion ?Pussy? Flowers. The young McCaulay read Dawson?s play to come out for the save, and let off a slight rocket that sailed over Dawson?s head and found the back of the net for the 2?1 halftime, KremLake lead.

Two minutes into the second half, Anthony Flores was back at it again, locking up the game at 2?2. Both teams went at each other until the veteran Maurice ?Magic? Francis came in on a substitution for Jermaine ?Bowfoot? Zuniga. That substitution paid big dividends. David ?Dav? McCauley found ?Magic? inside the 18-yard box and he released a right-foot bomb in the 88thminute for the go-ahead goal. Two minutes later, Dav?s father, David ?Manu? McCauley, found Magic, who pulled out the wand and performed his magic. Francis faked right, then went left to pull the trigger for his second goal in two minutes to give Kremandala Lake?s new head coach, Braulio Arzu, his first win – a much-needed 4?2 victory for the Lake.
