SportsLeon O’Brien, in a class by himself, wins BAA New Year’s Day 10K Road Race

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Jan. 4, 2018– We have received no notification in advance or official report on the results of this New Year’s Day race, reportedly held by the Belize Athletic Association (BAA); but reporter William Ysaguirre was in the know, and forwarded his report to us with pictures showing BAA President Deon Sutherland congratulating winners of the different races held.

According to William’s stats, the Open Male 10K race was won in convincing fashion by Leon O’Brien, who did the 10K in 32:18:12; 2nd was Marvin Hope (40:23:22); 3rd Leon Muslar (40:44:72); 4th Juan Santos (42:35:47); and 5th Leon Guild (46:08:12).

The 5K Male race was won by Amir Ramos in 19:20:24; 2nd was Geovany Santos (20:26:67); 3rd Fred Usher (20:45:64); 4th Orlando Velasquez (22:06:34); and 5th Rahim Monsanto (22:35:92).

In the 5K Female race, Ashanti Carr was victorious in 26:08:77; 2nd was sister Ashontie Carr (26:09:20); 3rd was another sister, Ajahney Carr (32:10:35); 4th Asako Solis (38:13:56); and 5th Venenise Rodriguez (47:04:13).

As evidenced in the 10K report above, where he finished some 8 minutes ahead of the second place finisher, O’Brien, who is unbeaten in Belize road races for the past few years, has no local competition to push him to better times; but for some strange reason, he has not been selected to represent Belize in regional competitions.
