BELIZE CITY, Wed. Mar. 9, 2016–Duane Logan, 48, of Independence, died after being shot during a home invasion by two armed men on Saturday, March 5, at approximately 7:40 p.m.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Reymundo Reyes, Officer in Charge of Independence police, told Amandala that Logan was “accosted” by two masked men who were dressed in dark clothing as he opened the door to his home. The two men then took him inside.

According to Reyes, one of the men had a pump action shotgun, while the other had a machete.

When they got inside, the man with the machete took Logan’s common-law wife, Donavet Burgess, 26, into an adjacent bedroom, where she handed over money to the intruder, Reyes said. The intruders reportedly also wanted marijuana, we were told.

Meanwhile, Logan was outside the room, standing at the entrance to the living room, with the other intruder, while his 4-year-old daughter was watching television.

The intruder demanded that Logan lie on the floor, but he refused, and this was when he was shot in the left side of his chest, Reyes said.

The two men then ran out of the house.

Logan was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m.

Reyes said that the intruders escaped with money, jewelry and cellphones. Police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
