GeneralPolice vehicle fatally hits Eldridge man on bicycle

5 ½ MILES, San Antonio Road, Toledo District, Wed. June 20, 2018– Yesterday morning around 7:30 a.m., a 68-year-old man, Selvin Bahadur, was hit by a vehicle while he was riding his bicycle on the San Antonio Road. The vehicle which hit him was a government-issued F-150 pickup, the type driven by the police.

Police have confirmed that indeed, Corporal Alexander Salam, 40, from the Belmopan Police Station, was behind the wheel of the pickup which hit Bahadur, a resident of Eldridge in the Toledo District, and killed him.

In an interview with News5, Bahadur’s nephew, Wilfred Jacobs, said that Bahadur was on his way to sell crabs, and he was riding his bike in the direction of San Antonio when he was knocked down.

Salam and an undisclosed number of officers were in the truck at the time of the accident. They had attended a wake the night before in San Antonio Village and were driving in Bahadur’s direction. A urine sample has been taken from Salam and sent for testing to determine if his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit.

Bahadur sustained abrasions to his head, a punctured lung caused by a broken rib, and two broken legs.  Upon hitting Bahadur, Salam stopped, picked him up, and rushed him to the Punta Gorda Hospital, but Bahadur succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment about an hour after he was hit.

Salam was served with an NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution). Meanwhile, police continue their investigation.
