BELIZE CITY, Thurs. June 14, 2018– In some hectic primary school football action over the past few days at the MCC Grounds, the Belize City primary schools female (F) and male (M) champions were decided yesterday; and today they joined the Belize Rural champion teams in competing for the Belize District championship at the MCC.
Belize City Championship

In Belize City semifinals action on Tuesday of this week, (F) St. Luke Methodist won in penalties, 3-1, over St. John Vianney, after drawing 0-0 in regulation; (F) St. Ignatius won, 3-2, in sudden death penalties, after drawing, 1-1, with Holy Redeemer in regulation; (M) Queen Square Anglican dropped Ephesus SDA, 2-1, in regulation; and (M) Unity Presbyterian also won in regulation, 2-0, over Ebenezer Methodist.

Yesterday, Wednesday, it was the championship finals for Belize City.  In the females, St. Ignatius defeated St. Luke Methodist, 1-0, with a goal from Khaya Gordon; and for the males, Queen Square Anglican also won, 1-0, over Unity Presbyterian, with a goal from Teavaun Gibson.

Belize District Championship

Today, Thursday, the Belize District finals were held at the MCC Grounds, where Belize City was represented by the females of St. Ignatius RC and St. Luke Methodist, and the males of Unity Presbyterian and Queen Square Anglican; while Belize Rural was represented by the females of Our Lady of Lourdes RC from Maskall and San Pedro RC, and the males of Ladyville Evangelical and San Pedro RC.

Both female semifinals were decided by penalty kicks after ending deadlocked in regulation.  St. Luke Methodist girls won by penalties over Our Lady of Lourdes RC; and St. Ignatius RC won by penalties over San Pedro RC.

In the male semifinals, Ladyville Evangelical dropped Unity Presbyterian, 2-0, with goals from Tarike Campbell and Stiven Rivera; and Queen Square Anglican edged San Pedro RC, 2-1, with a goal each from Jarren Rivera and Keedenshay Bowen, while Jahleel Noralez scored for San Pedro RC.

In the female championship final, it was 1-1 in regulation, with Samryn Rancharan scoring for St. Luke Methodist, while Kaliegh Cardinez tallied for St. Ignatius RC.  In the ensuing penalty kicks, St. Luke Methodist prevailed, 3-1, for the championship.

And in the male championship game, Ladyville Evangelical defeated Queen Square Anglican, 2-1, in regulation, with both goals coming from Stiven Rivera, while Queen Square’s only goal was by Keedenshay Bowen.

The Nationals

The National Primary School Football Tournament is scheduled for next Friday, June 22, in Belmopan.  Representing Belize District will be St. Luke Methodist School in the females and Ladyville Evangelical School in the males.

(Amandala Sports Ed. Note:  I witnessed the Belize City finals at the MCC on Wednesday, and was surprised, when giving some of the Queen Square Anglican boys a drop home in the evening, that they were all eager to go and play more ball with friends that same day, even though they would be playing in the District Finals the following day.)
