DANGRIGA, Wed. Dec. 6, 2017–Quarterfinals knockout games were held over the weekend for the Stann Creek Football Association’s (SCFA) 1st Division Cup 2017 tournament at the Carl Ramos Stadium. Two quarterfinal games were played on Friday night, and the other two on Sunday afternoon.
In the opener on Friday, December 1, Ecumenical High School and B & B Land Sharks played to a 3-3 tie in regulation. Myreque Francis (39’), Zion Ramos (56’) and Izon Gill (86’) each gave the lead to Ecumenical; while B&B managed to tie the score each time through Carl Saravia (44’), Carlos Lino (62’) and Alexander Peters (90’). This game had to go into penalty shootout, and it was B & B Land Sharks who came out with the 5-4 victory. In the nightcap, it was Silk Grass Strikers, 3-2, over Hopkins Blak Lyons. Shaking the net for Silk Grass were Kenyon Lewis (15’ & 30’) and Raheem Swazo (80’); while Hopkins’ goals were by Mark Petillo, Jr. and Devanny Tillett (85’).
Game 1 on Sunday, December 3, saw Conquerors taking a commanding lead with goals from Leonard Valdez (35’) and Gilbert Swazo (56’); but Pomona Warriors came back strong with goals from Nickford Miranda, Jr. (68’) and Carlton Thomas (82’), to secure the 2-2 draw in regulation. This game also had to go into penalties, where Conquerors won in sudden-death shoot-out. In game 2 on Sunday, it was Dangriga Young Footballers Academy (DYFA) with the 5-3 win over South Side Warriors. Shaking the net for DYFA were Janard Castillo (12’ & 20’), Alton Carr (55’), Lawrence Joseph (61’) and Chris Flores (86’); while South Side got 2 goals from Brandon Cacho (71’ & 77’) and the other from Byron Chavez (83’).
Four teams are now in the knockout semifinals – B & B Land Sharks, Silk Grass Strikers, Conquerors, and Dangriga Young Footballers Academy.
The SCFA 1st Division Cup 2017 continues this weekend with the Semifinals Round. (The two winners of this round play for first and second place prizes, and the losers play for third prize.) This round will be played for ninety minutes; if there is no winner at the end of ninety minutes, we will go straight into penalty shoot-out.
