Lilly White presents “Under-15 Summer 4-A-Side” at Holy Redeemer playground on July 12

Sports/community activist Edward Charles Rubio, well known in sporting circles as “Lilly White,” told us this morning that he is organizing a small-goals knockout football tournament at Holy Redeemer playground, corner North Front Street and Hyde’s Lane. “Every day, since school closed, the boys are knocking on my door to know when I will be holding another tournament,” he said. We inquired if he has the approval of Holy Redeemer authorities to use the playground, and Lilly White said that the priests told him to go ahead with their full support.

The games are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, and “there will be lots of food, drink and music free,” according to the flyer he is circulating.

Lilly White said he has a form he will need teams to fill out with each player’s name, age, “yes” or “no” if they are attending school; and if “yes,” which school they attend. “We are not turning back any child, as long as he is under 15 years old, even if he is not attending school,” he maintained.

“Our prizes will be all back-to-school supplies, including hair-cuts so they can look sharp going back to school,” explained Lilly White.

We asked Lilly White about his last planned event for Fathers’ Day. He said he had to cancel because the MCC was closed to the public, and the Yabra field was taken up with other competition games. “But, as my birthday is coming up on July 17, I am planning a big Birthday Bash, where I am challenging Yabra veterans to a game on Sunday, July 20, and we will have a big party afterwards.”

For the small-goals 4-A-Side Knockout on July 12, Lilly White is seeking contributions from the public for “water, soda and food. I hope you can find it in your heart to support Lilly White’s event to put a smile on the kids’ face…. I am trying to let the kids know that a whole lot of people love them; so they must learn respect, love and understanding.”

Interested persons can contact Lilly White at 624-2640 or 636-0939
