Headline4 home invasions/burglaries in one week in the Cayo District

CAYO DISTRICT, Thurs. Oct. 4, 2018– News of two worrisome incidents came out of the Cayo District this week concerning two senior citizens who were badly beaten during separate home invasions. The first incident occurred on Monday, October 1, at the home of an American national, William Scott Field, 64.

According to police, one of Field’s workers arrived at his home in Santa Elena and began calling out for him. The worker became concerned when Field did not respond, and, having his own keys to the home, he used these to enter. When he did enter, he found Field on the floor in a semi-unconscious state, with serious injuries to his face.

Field was taken to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, and later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, where today he reportedly was in a coma and was listed in a critical condition.

When we tried to check tonight whether Field was still in a coma, a KHMH official told us that that information could not be released.

Police investigating the crime found the house ransacked, but were unable to determine if anything was stolen, since Field was unable to talk to them because of his injuries.

Police say that they currently have no leads, but do know that Field often entertained visitors and so they will be looking at those persons who frequent his home.

The second home invasion happened in Blackman Eddy. Although an official report had not been made, police confirmed that an 80-year-old woman had been beaten after a man forcibly entered her home on Tuesday, October 2, between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The man reportedly stole an assortment of jewelry, a laptop, and other items. When he encountered the elderly woman, he hit her in the face, injuring her. The woman then managed to exit the house and run to a nearby farmhand for help. The farmhand then phoned the woman’s daughter, who also lives at the house, but was out at the time.

The elderly woman was then taken to a hospital, where she was treated and later released.

These invasions are two of a total of four home invasions/burglaries that occurred in the Cayo District this week. On Monday night, October 1, police visited the home of Melida Diaz, 34, at around 7:30 p.m. Diaz, who lives in San Ignacio, told police she left her home in the morning and when she returned around 6:30 p.m. she noticed that an assortment of items were missing.

On Monday night, Ruth Cruz, 32, of Esperanza, Cayo District, reported that between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon her home was burglarized and a toolbox, some jewelry, and an undisclosed amount of cash were stolen.
