Funeral services were held today at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral Church for shooting victim, Dayan “Damion” Gordon, 22, also known as “Red Rat,” a resident of #46 Gibnut Street who was gunned down in cold blood over the weekend on the Southside of Belize City.

While the funeral was being held four days after the shooting, police escorted the accused killers, Belize City residents Callum Sutherland and Alfred Conorquie, to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court and charged them with murder.

On Sunday, November 19, moments after the return of electricity to the city, Gordon was gunned down near the intersection of Iguana and Seagull Streets. He was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the head, from a distance of about 15 feet. It is believed that the shot to the head took his life minutes later.

Police say that sometime around 8:30 on that Sunday night, they responded to reports of shots being fired near the corner of Iguana and Seagull Streets. By the time they arrived at the scene, Gordon had been rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say that their investigation into the shooting has revealed that Gordon was standing near the corner of the two streets when a white Toyota Camry pulled up and one of the occupants of the vehicle fired at Gordon through the passenger window.

Police say they have no motive for the shooting.

Both men appeared in #1 Magistrate’s Court in front of Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord. They were read the charges, but no plea was taken because of the nature of the crime. Sutherland was additionally charged with one count of conspiracy to commit murder. They were remanded to the Hattieville Prison until December 22.

Street sources told Amandala that Gordon’s shooting was as a result of an old beef not involving Gordon, but involving two of his friends with whom he usually associated on Iguana Street.

The quarrel, we understand, was over a jacking which is alleged to have taken place sometime between March/April of this year, when a drug dealer was allegedly jacked of $25,000.

This was confirmed by a friend of Gordon’s with whom we spoke on Tuesday. Our source asked for anonymity. Gordon, we understand, was not the intended target that day, but the target could not be found, and as the saying goes, “When yuh can’t ketch Harry, yuh ketch eh shirtt” – Gordon was shot instead.

Neighbors in the area told us that earlier that night the same white vehicle was seen circling the area. Gordon noticed it, but stayed where he was.

Sometime later that night the same car appeared again, and Gordon, who was alone sitting on the fence area, walked towards the car. As he approached the vehicle, he was shot from about 15 feet away, and the vehicle sped off.

Gordon died about 10 to 15 minutes later on the ground, gunned down about three blocks from his Gibnut Street home.

He leaves behind his mother, Jacinta Garbutt; father, Leslie Gordon, two sisters and one brother.

Gordon was the baby of the family.
