Ms. Williams told AMANDALA that she has acquired the services of Legal Aid attorney Anthony Sylvestre, Jr., and she is going to appeal the conviction and sentence.
A jury of 6 men and 3 women deliberated for 3 ? hours before finding Williams, who was unrepresented by an attorney, guilty of dangerous harm. Its verdict was unanimous.
Douze, a Haitian national working as a security guard, was shot in the left side of his chest during an attempted robbery of Vin Hong Supermarket, located on Euphrates Avenue. The incident occurred on June 16, 2004. In a statement, Douze said that while he was standing on the steps of the supermarket, two men approached him, and one of them had a gun.
The gunman fired a shot that grazed his elbow, then fired a second shot that struck him in the left side of his chest, which threw him to the ground.
Williams was identified as the gunman by a former Cabinet Secretary and magistrate, Orton Clarke, who was a customer at the supermarket.
Williams? alibi was that he was at his sister?s house, babysitting his daughter while his girlfriend?s hair was being braided by his sister.
The sister and the girlfriend corroborated William?s story, but the jury did not believe them.
The second person involved in the shooting was never arrested.
