When is Mr. Obama coming to Belize? That is the question Kremandala posed to Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on the occasion of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, which saw US President Barack Obama visit the twin island republic for the first time – albeit without his wife, Michelle Obama, who had been expected to attend the Summit with him.
“We sat at the same table in the dinner and in fact he was the one that raised it with me,” PM Barrow responded. “He said that he’d love to come to Belize.”
Barrow added that President Obama is “…indicating that he is likely to announce his nomination for the next ambassador to Belize in the next month and a half. Thereafter, it will have to go through the Congressional processes [for] confirmation of that – of his nomination. He is telling me that the person he proposes to nominate is a very, very good friend of his and he thinks that will make it easier for him to work on the logistics of coming to Belize.”
During opening ceremonies held at the Summit, Obama said he wanted to start a new beginning for US relations with the other countries of the hemisphere.
