After a short break for the Easter holidays, the Belize District Basketball Association (BDBA) Digicell Ballin-4-Life basketball tourney resumes this weekend with a full slate of games scheduled for Friday night and Sunday evening. Hoops News’ pick for “Game of the Week” is tonight’s senior encounter, which has the UB Black Jaguars hosting the San Pedro Tigersharks. The Black Jaguars, who currently lead the competition with a perfect (2-0) record, have been putting up huge numbers against opponents, and more than likely will want to continue that trend. On the other hand, this game is clearly a pivotal game for the San Pedro team, who with a loss would fall to (0-3) on the season, which, if our records are accurate, would qualify as their worst start in team history. The other senior match-up for the weekend puts the (2-0) Belmopan Bandits up against a struggling (0-2) Brothers Habet Berger Boys. The Bandits, who are coming off that impressive performance against Jamboree, will certainly be looking ahead to extending their winning streak to three games. Meanwhile, in a rare occurrence, the Friday night opening act will feature female basketball, and will put the (0-1) Mysfits up against the (0-1) Maria Chang Eagles. There are three U-19 games on the schedule for Sunday, with Truckers looking for their first win of the season when they host the (2-0) Ghetto Ballers. The second game of the afternoon will see NHI seeking their first win of the season, as they face the Orange Walk Runnin Rebels; while the third game has league leading (3-0) Belize Bank Bulldogs hosting the Youth Ballers.
BECOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
In similar fashion to Belize City, last weekend being the Easter weekend, no games were held in the 2010 BECOL Basketball Championship, being played out west in San Ignacio Town. However, the season resumes this weekend with No Ceilings trying to out-power Cayo Ballers in U-18 action tonight, followed by Cayo Ballers versus Junior Warriors in U-21, and E3 Stars versus Gold in senior play. There are also three games on the schedule for Saturday night, with the opening game being a U-21 match-up between Hydro Power and Flames, and the middle game an exhibition game between Cayo’s U-13 selection, who we understand will be travelling to Guatemala to participate in a friendly exchange. The third and final game for the weekend will be between Plebe and Invaders in senior play.
