C. B.’s All Belize Cricket selection

LettersC. B.’s All Belize Cricket selection
Belize City
1st August, 2010

Editor Amandala
Dear Sir,

I am responding to a request by your sports editor to submit a list of players who deserve to be named on an All Belize Cricket team

The ideal would be if cricketers of a bygone age would get together and make a selection for the record. It will be better than a personal selection but this is still a worthwhile exercise.

Two of the players I chose are in their nineties. I hope that my selection provokes them to name their own. That would be interesting. I want to see if they will choose themselves.

Most of the players named were good bowlers and capable batsmen.

I do not rate the ability of the players as bowler or batsman. To say that they were, with one exception, all well above average, is as far as I will go in this letter.

The Selection

Jack Lind – wk and b
Telford Vernon – blr and b
Albert Cattouse – blr
Gilbert “Chico” Ellis – blr and b
Sunt Trumbach – blr and b
C.F.S Brown – blr and b
Eddie Hyde – wk and b
Lewis Belisle – blr and b
John Neal – blr and b
Bertie Ellis – blr and b
Henry Tucker – blr and b

Legend
wk – wicket keeper
blr – bowler
b – batsman

P.S. Four of this list made a hundred runs in one innings. They are Telford Vernon, Chico Ellis, Lewis Belisle and Sunt Trumbach. Sunt did it twice. Bertie Ellis and Gilbert “Chico” Ellis are father and son, respectively.

NOTE: In cricket a turn at bat is called an “innings.”
Sincerely,
C. B. Hyde
