Two well-known community activists, Yaya Marin-Coleman and Samiyyah Andrewin, are planning to conduct a March Against Corruption in downtown Belize City this Saturday, November 2, 2013.

Marin-Coleman told Amandala that she believes that there is a seemingly uncontrollable corruption problem within the country of Belize, and hence the need for the march.

The March Against Corruption is an international campaign which is aimed at raising awareness about the corrupting influence of money and special interests in governance and public policy-making, providing a forum for people to organize and speak out against corruption, and educating the public about the consequences of corruption.

According to Marin-Coleman, they decided to take up the initiative as a part of their efforts to take on the responsibility to ensure that Belize is a part of the international campaign against corruption and also to show that there are people in Belize who are standing up against corruption.

The march is scheduled to take place on Saturday in front of the Supreme Court in Belize City from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The organizers indicated that they will apply for the permit to carry out the demonstration tomorrow, Friday, and that the public is welcome to join in the demonstration on Saturday and may bring signs addressing corruption in Belize.

Yaya Marin-Coleman stated that their goal is to educate people so that individuals can understand that government simply manages the country’s resources on our behalf, and therefore, as citizens, we need to ensure that we are all provided with equal rights and a better quality of life for all Belizeans.
