A Belize City resident who was attending a funeral service yesterday evening at the Lord Ridge Cemetery in Belize City came upon a ghastly find after tracking a foul scent which was emanating from a nearby tomb.

Apart from discovering that the grave had actually been tampered with, she sighted a human skull in what appeared to be a late state of decomposition, and which was believed to have been recently placed at the location.

The woman who made the find wishes to remain anonymous, and today, she explained that she decided to walk in a separate direction from the rest of the funeral-goers yesterday, and that is the route that led her into an area where she smelled a strange stench and later spotted the skull, apparently tucked within an old grave which showed signs of tampering.

She said, “I was at a funeral yesterday, and for some reason, my eyes looked right there and I saw it. I then began showing everybody it [because] I know that once a grave is old, there shouldn’t be any kind of bad smell coming out of it like that.”

The woman immediately alerted the authorities, but they didn’t respond at that time, and instead, told her to get in contact with the persons who are in charge of the graveyard to deal with the situation.

However, a team of police officers arrived at the cemetery this morning, Tuesday, and scoured the tomb, but reportedly concluded that the skull might have been that of someone who was buried there a long time ago.

Nevertheless, after analyzing pictures of the skull and the way in which it was positioned in the grave, Assistant Superintendent Calbert Flowers, Deputy Officer in Charge of Belize City Police Precinct 2, pledged that police will continue to investigate the discovery to find out if it was indeed buried at that location, or if it was put there recently.
