BELIZE CITY, Mon. Jan. 25, 2016–Kirk Davis and Lorina Garnett, both residents of the Gungulung area in Lake Independence, told Amandala that the long-term effects on their area of the floods in November which devastated the entire city, have not yet been addressed by the Government.

While acknowledging that they did receive food and aid packages through the Human Services Department and the Red Cross, the two Gungulung residents lamented that many areas are still under water and access to some homes is very difficult. They also noted that the “London Bridges” used to access some of the homes are water-soaked, which makes them dangerous to walk on.

Davis and the other residents call on the Government to assist the residents by ensuring there are better roads and walkways to access their homes, and by eliminating the “London Bridges” in their area.

Garnett, for her part, said that, since she doesn’t have a job, she has created her own employment. She now makes a livelihood by selling tasty food priced from $3 up to the people in the area.

She is calling on the Government to provide more assistance to people in the area.
