CROOKED TREE, Belize District, Mon. June 25, 2018– Lindberg Anthony, 56, a mechanic of Crooked Tree who was being held in a detention cell at the Crooked Tree Police Station last night, was found hanging by a cloth that was tied around his neck and tied to a window inside the cell block about two hours after he was detained.
Apparently, said police, Anthony tore his shirt and used the cloth to hang himself.
Anthony was pronounced dead on arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
Police have declared the death a suicide. They say that yesterday evening, Anthony was drinking in the village when at about 7:30, they received reports that he was verbally abusing people.
As a result, they went for him and put him in the police station’s detention cell, and at about 9:30 when they went to check on him, they found him hanging in the cell.
Police have launched an investigation into Anthony’s death, as is customary when anyone dies while in police custody.
Police said that Anthony was not known to them.
